As Spring arrives birds and bulbs are faced again with March’s freezing conditions as the UK is set to brace itself for another weekend of cold weather, starting on Saturday into Sunday with more freezing conditions.
Where possible and sometimes ignored, water pipes are left unprotected with no installation with lying water freezing and ends up bursting pipes which can be avoided by these simple steps.
- Insulate open water pipes in your loft, garage and outside area where possible helping stop them from freezing .
- Outside water taps should be fitted with an isolating and none return valve where possible enabling you to turn off from inside your property and drain down to stop your outside tap from freezing.
- If you have an empty property, turn the water off and drain your water out through taps where there is not heating on stopping pipes freezing which could leave to an unnecessary damage or to an insurance claim if your insured!
- If your water is not coming from your taps can be a sign your mains water pipe could be frozen. Open your taps and by using warm water from a kettle to help thaw the frozen water in the mains pipe by gently pouring over it to help unfreeze. If this cannot be done then by using a hair dryer, electric heater or warm towels where possible or even turning up your heating can also help.
It is the homeowners responsibility to ensure your water pipes on your property and water isn’t being wasted or used unnecessary.
NEVER USE A OPEN FLAME LIKE A PROPANE TORCH TO THAW FROZEN PIPES AS CAN DAMAGE YOUR PIPE AND START A FIRE IN YOUR PROPERTY.
